Repeat Prescriptions request
It is your responsibility to ensure you have a sufficient supply of repeat medications. This is especially true during weekends and public holidays. Make sure that you check your medicine supply regularly.
If you are on regular medication you will be issued with a repeat prescription slip. You may request repeat prescriptions by ticking the items required on the slip. This can then be posted in the prescriptions box just inside the practice entrance or handed in at the reception desk. You can also hand the request into the pharmacy that usually dispenses your prescriptions.

If you prefer you may also post your request to us, with a stamped, addressed envelope for a prompt return to you of your repeat slip.
Urgent Prescriptions Requests
Emergency prescription requests are requests for medication which you need within 24 hours to prevent you becoming seriously ill. Emergency medications may include; epileptic medication, insulin, inhalers for lung conditions, emergency contraception and Epipen for anaphylaxis.
Emergency prescription requests are not requests for medication which have been ordered late. You should allow 72 working hours for routine repeat prescription requests. Please respect our staff, as it is your responsibility to ensure that your repeat prescription request is ordered in plenty of time.
If you need an emergency prescription, you must hand it in to the surgery by Midday to have it completed later that day.Emergency prescriptions will not be done while you wait.
This facility is carefully monitored and should not be abused. Any emergency requests will be noted on your medical record. Please give one week’s notice whenever possible.
Wondering why it takes 72 hours to complete a request?
The Swan Surgery receives over 200 prescriptions requests every day. Our prescription clerk has to check your medical records to ensure that your medication request is on your repeat prescription, then request it and pass it to your doctor. Between clinics, your doctor will double check the medication to ensure that it is still appropriate for you.
If you collect your prescriptions, one of our admin team will then file your prescription ready for collection. Delays may occur if your medication request is not on your repeat prescription, is different to what your doctor has prescribed for you, is a new medication from a consultant and we haven’t issued before, or if your doctor wished to change your medication.
Patients on repeat medication will be asked to see a doctor, nurse practitioner or practice nurse at least once a year to review these regular medications and notification should appear on your repeat slip.
Please ensure that you book an appropriate appointment to avoid unnecessary delays to further prescriptions.
Can I order a repeat prescription in advance?
Except in circumstances where you will be away, the earliest you can order a prescription is up to five days before it is due.
If you are going away, for example, you can make an early request but you will need to provide us with a note stating the reason for your early request. This may then avoid any necessary delay.
The Electronic Prescription Service (EPS) is an NHS service. It gives you the chance to change how your GP sends your prescription to the place you choose to get your medicines or appliances from.
What does this mean for you?
If you collect your repeat prescriptions from your GP you will not have to visit your GP practice to pick up your paper prescription. Instead, your GP will send it electronically to the place you choose, saving you time. You will have more choice about where to get your medicines from because they can be collected from a pharmacy near to where you live, work or shop.
You may not have to wait as long at the pharmacy as there will be time for your repeat prescriptions to be ready before you arrive.
Is this service right for you?
Yes, if you have a stable condition and you:
- Do not want to go to your GP practice every time to collect your repeat prescriptions.
- Collect your medicines from the same place most of the time or use a prescription collection service now.
It may not be if you:
- Do not get prescriptions very often or pick up your medicines from different places.
How can you get EPS?
You need to choose a place for your GP practice to electronically send your prescriptions to. This is called a nomination. You can choose:
- A pharmacy
- A dispensing appliance contractor (if you are eligible)
Ask any pharmacy or dispensing appliance contractor that offers EPS or your GP practice to add your nomination for you. You do not need a computer for this.
Can I change my nomination or cancel it and get a paper prescription?
Yes you can. If you do not want your prescription to be sent electronically tell your GP practice. If you want to cancel or change your nomination speak to any pharmacist or dispensing appliance contractor that offers EPS, or your GP practice. Tell them before your next prescription is due or your prescription may be sent to the wrong place.
Is EPS reliable, secure and confidential?
Yes, your electronic prescription will be seen by the same people in GP practices, pharmacies and NHS prescription payment and fraud agencies that see your paper prescriptions now.
Sometimes dispensers may see that you have nominated another dispenser. For example, if you forget who you have nominated and ask them to check or, if you have nominated more than one dispenser. Dispensers will also see all the items on your reorder slip if you are on repeat prescriptions.
